How To Keep Kids Teeth Healthy

A mom and dad brushing teeth with little daughter, with text - Fairfield, CAIt’s natural for every parent to want their children to have healthy teeth. Good dental habits that are taught now will likely last long into their adult life. So what can you do to get your children into a good routine of cleaning their teeth?

Tips For Healthy Kids Teeth

Try some of the following tips and help your kids get into a good oral hygiene routine.

  • Set the example – Kids love to imitate their parents. So brush your teeth and floss together with your children. This can be a great motivation for them to clean their teeth.
  • Start young – children can start to learn how to brush their teeth from 3 years of age. You should start by using toothpaste about the size of a grain of rice. When they have learned to spit out the toothpaste rather than swallowing it, you can put on a bit more toothpaste until you reach the size of a pea. You can introduce flossing and mouthwash as their teeth start to grow together.
  • Visit the dentist – You can start taking your child to the dentist from 1 year of age or within 6 months of their first tooth appearing (whichever comes first). Then after this, you should take them every 6 months. It could be advantageous to schedule their appointment at the same time as yours, again setting the example and making it more convenient for you.
  • Open communication – Let your children know what to expect from their visit to the dentist and always try to be positive. This will go a long way in helping them to relax.
  • Reduce their sugar – A diet with high levels of sugar are the main cause of tooth cavities. Teaching your children about the dangers of eating too many sweets and drinking sugary drinks can help them to be on your side when reasoning with them.
  • Brush sufficiently – Children should learn to brush their teeth for at least 2 minutes each time. Your child can learn to appreciate the time needed to clean their teeth properly using tartar dyes or a timer. There are also apps available that are designed to make brushing fun for kids.
  • Consider sealants – You could consider sealing your children’s teeth. Sealants can help prevent cavities which lead to the use of fillings.
  • Make goals and reward them – One way to motivate your children is to track their teeth brushing activity using a chart. When they reach certain goals you could reward them with a trip out or a toy.
  • Don’t share toothbrushes – Identify your children’s toothbrushes to keep them separate. This will germ sharing. Other things to consider are not sharing pacifiers, cups, and other food utensils.
